Here’s your life in 2040 — if the EU’s climate plan works

The year is 2040, and the European Union’s green revolution is 90 percent complete.

Climate neutrality is within reach as the bloc has managed to slash its collective greenhouse gas emissions to a tenth of 1990 levels, in line with a target proposed 16 years earlier.

The result is a Continent transformed — no matter how much leading EU politicians, regulation-weary and election-wary, sought to downplay the consequences in 2024. Getting here wasn’t easy: Governing coalitions shattered, companies shuttered, and farmers besieged Brussels more than once.
