Love your enemies | Disagree better, not less

Given the partisan rancor that has come to define America’s public discourse, it would be easy to believe that our lives would greatly improve if we all just decided to agree more, or at least disagree less. However, the key to progress and greater unity as a country isn’t actually less disagreement — it’s betterdisagreement. A vibrant competition of ideas is what helps us stay one step ahead of mediocrity and stagnation, and we should be eager participants in that competition.

But while the competition of ideas is essential for progress, how we disagree is almost, if not just, as important. In the first of a series of three brief video lessons on ways each of us can build a new social movement based in love and brotherhood, Arthur Brooks outlines several practical strategies for how we can disagree better with our ideological opponents, even in the face of the bitterness we have come to experience so regularly in American public life.

So watch “Disagree Better, Not Less” now, preorder a copy of “Love Your Enemies” for more on these topics — and then put these lessons into practice with a friend with whom you disagree.
