Wireless fiber: A solution to Google Fiber’s cost challenges?

Ten years ago, transportation planners wanted to create a more efficient use of public roads by laying fiber optic cables into the highways and embedding sensors in the roads to monitor traffic patterns. It was an expensive experiment in giving commuters real-time traffic information. That same year, a company called Waze created a mobile app with the same objective but without the need for public infrastructure investment. Waze’s approach, which minimizes cost by relying on crowd-sourced information rather than on expensive and disruptive infrastructure and hardware investment, has been successful. In 2013, Waze was ranked the best mobile app of the year by Mobile World Congress and was later bought by Google.
