There were rumblings and rumors.

People were getting sick.

The disease was spreading.

The origin wasn’t important, but the symptoms were. No one wanted to become ill.

Large gatherings were avoided.

Plans were cancelled.

Colleges were closed.

And people fled from the cities to the countryside, isolating themselves from a virus that few understood.

If this sounds like 2020, you wouldn’t be mistaken. However, this was the London plague of 1665, the worst outbreak of bubonic plague since the Black Death of 1348.

It was here that a young Isaac Newton found himself back home. Cambridge, where he was attending university, was closed. Unlike today, there were no virtual classes. No Zoom lectures, no social media, no entertainment. It was simply an individual and his free time. There was nothing to do but wait and in Newton’s case, think.

Lacking the structures of the university and its limited curriculum, Newton’s mind began to wander. He began to question, to engage in deep thoughts, and to experiment. Without anything to distract him, this was perhaps one of the greatest periods of scientific thought in the history of our species.
