Can tech and Trump unite on a growth agenda?
The technology industry and the Trump administration appear to have gotten off to a rocky start. After a cordial meeting at Trump Tower in December, the administration’s executive order on immigration stunned Silicon Valley, jolting the industry to action. The Trump administration, however, softened some of the order’s most problematic elements, such as blocking green card holders, and in so doing may have shown an ability to digest feedback and correct mistakes. Such give and take will need to be repeated as these two centers of American power, a continent both geographically and culturally apart, work toward the common good.
Moving forward, our primary challenge is a that has left millions of Americans behind and threatens to explode federal and state budgets. If the US had kept growing at its historically average pace following the Great Recession, the economy would have been around $2.8 trillion larger in 2016. This gigantic growth gap is the chief source of discontent that is roiling our politics. The new 10-year outlook from the Congressional Budget Office projects more of the same — growth of just 1.9 percent per year through 2027.
