
The case for a new strategic concept for NATO
In about 18 months’ time, NATO will celebrate the 70th anniversary of its founding, a milestone sure to occasion retrospectives about the key role the alliance has played in maintaining the peace and security of the transatlantic region. But the anniversary will also give rise to questions about NATO’s relevance for today and its relevance for the future. To meet those questions head-on, NATO needs a new Strategic Concept.
The Strategic Concept is NATO’s authoritative statement of how the alliance intends to address current security threats and challenges within the principles of its founding treaty, the North Atlantic Treaty (1949). Yet, as I note in a paper just published by AEI, the last Strategic Concept adopted by the alliance was issued in 2010. And, to put it bluntly, a whole lot has changed since then.
