Dictators, democrats, dictatorship, and democracy

Talk of dictators and dictatorship is everywhere. Trump correctly identified Venezuela’s leader as a dictator, but critics continue to label Trump as one. To be fair, Trump occasionally behaves like a dictator, but the US is not a dictatorship. These competing characterizations point to a broader confusion about the nature of democracy itself. There are impartial ways to identify dictators and democrats and scientific methods for measuring dictatorship and democracy. We should start using them.
