Every European Country Should Have a Minister for Civil Defense

Among the ministers in Sweden’s newly appointed government is Carl-Oskar Bohlin, a 36-year-old who’s making news. What makes Bohlin’s appointment so interesting, however, isn’t his personality — it’s his job. Bohlin is pioneering the role of minister for civil defense.

With non-military threats against European countries rapidly increasing by the day, the creation of such a ministerial portfolio makes eminent sense. And given the Continent’s current trajectory, every European country needs its own.

“The civil parts of total defense have been neglected,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told the Swedish Parliament earlier this month, as he announced that his new government will work to increase resilience against hybrid threats and cyber aggression.
