
The authoritarian paternalism of EU tech policy
Authoritarian paternalism is an action by a centralized power to limit individual autonomy with the purported intention of protecting one’s own good. It should not to be confused with libertarian paternalism, the notion of policies that improve welfare by influencing choice without imposing material costs on the choice. The EU proffers that its actions to do right for “humanity” will somehow serve European citizens and businesses. Unsurprisingly, the EU’s seemingly humanitarian tech policy includes significant increases of bureaucratization and control by Brussels.
