The U.S. Is Not Close to Doing ‘Enough’ to Help Ukraine
As the war in Ukraine continues, many supporters in the West are reassessing our role. Should Western countries, particularly the United States, continue to supply Ukraine with money and arms? Do we risk getting caught in another expensive and seemingly endless conflict?
Paul Schwennesen, a military veteran and an environmental historian, argues that we can and should help Ukraine defend itself against a murderous authoritarian whose country has a history of violently oppressing this fledgling liberal democracy. As Ukrainian policy analyst Nataliya Melnyk has previously written in The UnPopulist, Ukrainians extricated themselves from the yoke of Soviet Communism not so they can simply return to Russian fascism now. That’s a noble goal whose monetary cost to us is low, insists Schwennesen, and the moral upside is high.
Contrary to what some have proposed, encouraging Ukraine to quickly cede territory and end the conflict is not a defense of peace or liberty. It is giving up on the fight for freedom precisely where it matters the most. There is nothing pragmatic about pushing the people of Ukraine to give into authoritarianism against their will.
At The UnPopulist, we will not be shy about advocating for the people of Ukraine, and for liberty across the globe.
Slava Ukraini!
The U.S. Is Not Close to Doing ‘Enough’ to Help Ukraine
Republican Congressman Ralph Norman of South Carolina recently asked on National Public Radio “how much is enough” in terms of American material support for Ukraine? It’s a fair question, and one that bubbles ever closer to the surface of a turbulent political sea—some 40% of the Republican-leaning electorate currently thinks it’s already been too much at $75 billion in direct aid.* Norman acknowledged that while Ukraine is in our “vital national interest,” and that they are “fighting for their freedom,” against Putin who is a “thug,” he still wonders if we’ve done more than our fair share in the war there. When is enough enough, after all?
