In your own way

Back when I was researching my book The Antidote, about the pitfalls of positive thinking, I found myself in a giant sports arena in Texas, participating in a motivational seminar entitled, appropriately enough, “Get Motivated!” As disco lights flashed, upbeat music pounded, and pyrotechnics exploded on stage, we were instructed to rise from our seats, punching the air, while shouting about how thrilled we were to be there.

Needless to say, I found this all pretty appalling at the time. (Being asked to shout anything at a public gathering is, of course, a form of torture for a British person.) But it’s only more recently that I’ve come to be suspicious of the most basic notion underlying the whole world of “motivation”. I’m talking about the very idea – even when it’s communicated in far less cringeworthy ways – that “getting motivated” is a useful way to frame things in the first place.
