
The end of the Asian Century
As President-elect Trump prepares to take office, the US threat portfolio in the Asia-Pacific region is overflowing. North Korea has just announced its intention to test-fire an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of striking the United States. China continues to challenge the principal of freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. While largely peaceful on the surface, Asia is riddled with threats, from economic stagnation to political unrest and growing military tensions.
In my new book, “The End of the Asian Century”, I argue that if we wish to avoid the catastrophic consequences of a war in Asia or a widespread economic collapse, we need to understand the diversity of risks the region faces and begin thinking about how to manage those risks.
